Have you seen the new Nuvo alcohol marker sets released by Tonic Studios? There are 9 new sets of 3 markers each. In this blog post I am going to show you all the new colors, we will swatch them together and we will see how markers from the same set blend together.
the first release
The first sets were released about a year ago and I shared my review on them HERE along with a video. The colors you were able to get in sets back then are shown in the photo below :
rich reds, fragrant oranges, sunshine yellows, woodland greens, marina blues, royal purples, rosy pinks and stormy greys
and here are the fair skin tones and the natural browns from that first release
There were also another set called depth & shadows including a blender, a black and a light grey for shadows. And finally a metallic set called supreme metallics of water-based markers including a copper, gold and silver (all shiny).

So up to now there were 30 colors without counting the metallics and the depth and shadows.

the new release
This year they released new sets expanding their color range. There are now 57 colors available in sets of three. Again not counting the metallics and the depth and shadows sets.
Here is how their color wheel looks with the new colors added:
In the picture above you don’t see a swatch of the new aquamarines! As much as I love these colors they were sold out when I ordered the new markers so I have to wait a few more days before I complete my collection. But here is a photo of those yummy colors since you can’t see them above
What is great with the new released markers is that they have addressed the labeling issues I had with the first ones! Now the barrel has a color swatch and the number on top which makes them easy to use and put the correct caps back on!
In the photo below you can see a swatch on how markers from the same set blend together. I am really happy with the colors and I believe that the new sets added must have colors and completed their color wheel nicely.
points to consider
- a set comes with 3 colors that they blend nicely together, so no guessing here!
- there are 57 markers plus the metallics and the depth and shadows sets
- their price range is way lower than copics. You get 3 for less than $6. So if you are a beginner or if you don’t want to invest too much on markers they are a great way to go.
- they are not refillable
- they come with a chisel tip and a fine tip
- no brush nib here … would love to have that instead of the chisel tip that I almost never use
- the tapered shape helps you find the nib you want at a glance
- they are not round so they don’t roll all over the place
- alcohol markers blend with any brand of alcohol markers you already have provided they are close in shades. Don’t be afraid to mix and match them or to grab a couple of sets to expand your current collection of any brand.
- use alcohol friendly paper for best results such as (see suggestions of papers in the supply list below)
- stamp with alcohol friendly inks to avoid smudging while coloring in (see suggestions of black inks in the supply list below)

Thank you Vicky for showing these markers. I wish I had known about them before I spent a fortune on copics. I have almost the full set. They just sit as I have a terrible time trying to figure out which ones to use. I’d like to get rid of them, but not sure how. The Nuvo markers would be more my speed. I enjoy watching you work. Copics are the best! Hold on to them! I have a solution for you. If you almost have the whole set then here is what to do. Grab a bunch of rubber bands. Then go to this link https://www.simonsaysstamp.com/search?currency=USD&q=copic+trios and note the numbers on each trio set. Make your trios with rubber bands and keep them like that for the next time you color. It will help you a lot!!!! Also if you look online there are many charts of 3 colors that blend nicely…. always use the rubber bands to keep them together! Let me know if it helped!
I feel the exact same way! I like that all the Nuvo seem to work very well together in depth of color and values so no image is lighter or a different hue when used together. No one flower stands out as an example.
Thank you for this video! I have not tried alcohol markers before because of the cost, BUT I have really wanted to try them. I’m going to seriously consider trying these markers to start with to see if I like them and how I do with them. Thanks again — much appreciated! P.S. Thank you Vicky for your honest review of these markers. They look great and the price is a lot better than Copics. I know that everyone love the Copic markers, but they are very expencive especially if you also want to work with other products like ink and pencils.
Thanks Vicky I have promarkers haven’t been happy with them for a while so when I saw your first video on nuvo pens bought the fair skin colour set as that is always my failure, wow loved them, so waiting on more to arrive thanks for your true and honest opinion.

I was wondering if you could make a comparision color wise with the copics markers. I’d like to see which copics are closest to the nuvo as I already have a lot of copics and I don’t want to buy colors that I might already have in another brand.

hmmm … that would make a great video but it is difficult to do as I don’t have the full copics collection. So a comparison would not be accurate. I tend to use other alcohol markers than copics lately, as they are easier to get for me here… so I use Spectrum Noirs, Altenew and Nuvo ones.
