Happy new year! I hope you all had a lovely holiday and that you will all enjoy a healthy, successful and creative 2019!
This is the first blog post of the year and I am starting a new feature, called “a year in flowers”. It’s a yearly art journal project where I will be sharing pages using flowers as the focal point. And I start with the gorgeous hyacinth!

I am working on my 6×6 disc bound journal. The page is heavy watercolor cardstock and I started by applying a couple of sprays on the background. I used Altenew metallic sprays in Soft Lilac and Oceans Waves. It’s the easiest way to create an interesting background and allow for many techniques later on. I also used the Elegant Swirls stencil to lift some of the ink for a ghost effect. To complete the background I used my other favorite techniques, which are splatters and stamping.
The flowers are stamped using the Build-A-Flower: Hyacinth( ALTN | SSS ) stap set, that has just been released. I used 3 different color combos to add some variation on my page.
I like to add motivational quotes on my pages and I will be doing that on this flower art journal too. Plus I came up with the idea of sticking down the dictionary definition of the flowers I use on the page. This yearly project is going to be so much fun. I hope by the end of the year I will have at least one page for each letter of the alphabet!

What a great idea, Vicky! This one is beautiful. There are so many flower stamps, I look forward to seeing all the pages you create.
I learn so much by watching your videos Vicky, thanks for sharing both cards and art journal projects!
Beautiful art journal page! Great idea to create a year of flowers journal! I too love flowers and think this is a fabulous way to use my floral images.
What a fun and educational project. I didn’t know that the ‘th’ in hyacinth was not voiced. Maybe I need to copy your idea and make this journal, also!
Loved this new botanical dictionary!
What a great idea!!! And a great way to start off the new year. I look forward to seeing your journal transform throughout the year!! Thank you for the tips and ideas. Love the idea of doing a botanical theme … or picking any theme for an art journal. Having a focus might help me get to working more on mine. Best wishes for a happy, healthy, prosperous, joyful, adventurous and creative New Year!

Hi Vicky, love this idea for a little journal. How often are you doing a page in the Year of Flowers? Will it be daily or weekly?
Thanks for the great inspiration
Cecilia
This is beautiful, Vicky! I love flowers, and early Spring flowers are some of my favorites. I can’t wait to see how your journal progresses throughout the year.
Happy New Year Vicky for you and your loved ones.
What a great page to start the year with. I love flowers and I love the idea to make a Art Journal with flowers. I think I have to have a good look at my stamps, let my brain playing with the idea and I hope to join you in my own way in A year of flowers.
Thank you so much for showing.
Beautiful page! I love flower stamps and have many of them too. I love this idea of a themed journal and can’t wait to see what else you do with it. Thanks for sharing your ideas and talent with us.
Pretty card… I like the way you used corrugated backing and antiqued your definition. I also like the sparkly background and the colors you chose. Of course, I alway love your splashes (I’m a fan of splashes too). Thank you for sharing.
OOPS… I said card out of habit… LOL. I should have said journaling page. Please excuse the oversight.
What a grand idea for the themed journal! I have a LOT of the Altenew flower stamps and dies and also make my own disc-bound journals, so I may have to “borrow” your idea. Thanks for the inspiration.
Beautiful page and wonderful series. You inspire me! I’m going to start a disc bound art journal. Maybinask what stamp you used in the background for script?
