art journal flowers

Welcome to a fun blog hop! A new flower stamp has been released by Altenew for their Build-A-Flower collection. It’s the Japanese Mum and it’s gorgeous! It’s a layering stamp set but you can create flowers without using all the layers, or just stamp the outline and color it with your favorite medium. In the video, I demonstrate a few ways to use the stamp set for different results.

We celebrate with an inspirational blog hop and lots of giveaways.

art journal project –  A Year in Flowers

Instead of sharing a card using this stamp I am sharing an art journal page today. Remember if you are a cardmaker you already have everything you need to create lovely pages! This is a page for my “A year in flowers” project. I want to create an alphabet book all the way from A to Z, with flowers on every page. So here is my page for the letter J (Japanese Mum)

The flowers were really easy to create by using the stamp set. I used my Altenew watercolor brushes to add color and I went with 3 different color combinations for variation in my bouquet.

I created a quick background with my new distress oxide sprays in no time and I added I little bit of stenciling just for some visual texture. I made sure that my background is subtle as I wanted the flowers to be the focal point.

For the vase I used some Gilded Ombre Washi Tape ( ALTN | SSS | SBC ). I covered a piece of paper and then use my scissors to cut it out and make it look like a vase. I love the golden detail on this washi tape and I did add golden splashes and a gold J to bring everything together. The letter was cut out by using the Classic Alphabet Die Set ( ALTN | SSS | SBC ). I love that font and I will be using this alphabet  through out the whole art journal book.

  5. Vicky,
All your art journal pages you have created are beautiful. I think the idea of a journal for “a year of flowers” is a great inspiration. I am going to create a journal for my sister who is suffering with cancer to help her get through each month with a different flower .

  6. Love your work. Great color combination. Very clever idea to use the washi tape for the vase. The background looks great as well. Thanks for sharing your art.?

  7. I love the vase made with the wide washi tape and the techniques you used for the flowers are beautifully done. The watercolor brushes look so easy to use and so much easier than painting them with regular watercolour paint and brush techniques. Thank you so much for demonstrating these techniques. I hope to have these watercolor brushes in the future.

  8. I am really appreciating your Flower Art Journal.
Your definition of the flower is a great touch.
    Always Inspired. Thank you

  9. Vicky, you are ALWAYS so full of ideas for us to try. I cannot wait to do my flowers now with all the inspiration you gave me. Love the border ideas and using washie tape for the vase. Also, 3 different ways to do our flowers…Thank you!!! 🙂

  10. Your watercoloring of the new Japanese Mums in gorgeous! Love the way you used the washi tape to paper piece! So creative!

  11. Such a detailed & beautiful stamp! You are a very gifted artist and you bring the flowers to life. Thank you for sharing this special side of you!

  12. Hi Vicky. I was so happy to discover your site yesterday. I love the journal you have started. I am going on a trip over to Europe this year and thought I would do a journal of my trip. Watching your video has certainly inspired me to do this. I love Altenew layering flower stamps.

  13. Wow Simply Stunning page!! using the washi tape is a wonderful idea!
The flowers are just gorgeous!! Love it!

  14. What a great idea for a blog hop (instead of a card idea)!! I was just wondering the other day when you might return to working on your flower journal! You must have read my mind!! (Uh-Oh!!) The idea of having a theme for a journal is something I’m considering. It seems to me it would create more of a focus. Being new to art journaling I struggle with a personal inspiration for a page. You’ve created such a beautiful page and I appreciate (as always) the ideas and tips you offer in the video. I also really like the idea you had to put a letter on each page. I’m already looking forward to seeing how your flower journal progresses over the year. It’s such a wonderful idea! Thanks to your recent videos I finally got the few distress sprays (original) I have out the other day and played with them. I was surprised at how easy they were to work with as well as how much I liked the outcome. I’m planning to play with them again today. I just needed some help learning how to use them. THANK YOU!

  15. I love this idea and it would be a great journal to use my flower stamps more. If I don’t have a zinnia stamp I could always use another flower and call it Zoe’s (my grandchild) favorite flower to use the Z. So making a page for every flower of the alphabet can be very creative in descriptions, also. A little 10 year old friend of mine asked me to help her make a journal and I think I will use your idea when playing with her. She loves flowers and it would be a great afternoon getting to know her better, usie my stamps, and learning from a child’s point of view. Or maybe I’m kidding myself and just giving me an excuse to buy more flower stamps! LOL

  16. Your project is not only a terrific one, but your examples are just stunning. What a beautiful booklet you will have when finished!!

  17. Love your idea for a flower journal and the mums are beautiful. Thanks for the tips on coloring as well.
