Today I am back with another art journal page, for my “a year in flowers” project. C is for Crocus!

This is part of a blog hop! Altenew is releasing a new “Build-a-flower” stamp set on the 1st of each month and we celebrate this release with lots of inspiration and giveaways. You should have arrived here from Altenew Card Blog. This month the flower is Crocus!

video tutorial

You can enjoy the video below or at my YouTube channel

close-up photos

For my art journal I worked with my gel plate. I did lots of prints for the background as well as for stamping the flowers and leaves.

I worked with my Arteza acrylic paints on this project but in order to add the needed shading to the flowers I did stamp the different layers using my Altenew oval sets.

I always like to add the letter of the flower and the dictionary definition. It adds consistency to my book of flowers, as each page has something similar.

Make sure to check the video above for a step by step tutorial on this art journal project.

  1. I love this series and am so glad to see you use the new Arteza paints. I live mixed media’s and am always looking for new products and ideas. Thanks for an awesome product!

  2. I’m loving watching all your “Year In Flowers ” posts! Very inspiring! Your art journal pages are my favorite!

  3. Just watched your video on Youtube and….as always…. loved it! I really enjoyed the gel print for the flowers and the no black outline, eliminating the white border around it, so much better!!! I think it would look great in cards too. By the way you didn’t include the Faber Castel big brush artist pens in your supplies list, are they still out there? I have them, because you introduced them to me, I love to use your shading technique. Thanks again for another great and very informative video. 🙂

  4. This page is so springy and lovely – I love crocuses! I think this is the first page I’ve seen you create where you didn’t color the edges, but with the white from the gel plate print, it works out perfectly!

  5. I have many flower stamps and your “year in flowers“ art journal inspiries me to get them all out and also start a journal with them.

  6. I absolutely love your journals they’re gorgeous! You have inspired me to try making my own. Thank you!

  8. I love your art journal videos. The year in flowers is a great idea. Thank You for the inspiration

  9. Your awesome journals have inspired me to start one of my own, using the disc system. The punch you use and the discs are not too expensive and I love the idea that you can work on the page separately from the journal. Originally, it was supposed to be all watercolor, but since I can create my own pages it also includes colored pencil, alcohol ink, pen & ink with watercolor1
I love this flower journal you’re creating and think this crocus page is beautiful along with the others. Creating the background and then stamping the other layers of the flowers is a great idea!

  10. New to this and am blown away by all your techniques, ideas and beautiful designs. Very inspiring; it gave me some ideas of how to use all the supplies I have been purchasing, and not using! Thank you.

  15. Thank you for once again featuring the gel plate! Some good info about using it (like being mindful of the paint used and how it works). Beautiful page. I recently finished a mixed media canvas project and incorporated into it paper piecing, which was really fun to do and I like the way it came out. I also — for the first time — did white platters!!! It really worked well on the page. Thank you, Vicky, for all you teach as well as the inspiration and encouragement. I enjoy this series very much.
