Welcome to another Mixed Media Tuesday! We all have those gorgeous scrapbook and paper collections sitting in our stash that we love too much to cut into. Today, I’m showing you my exact 6-step method to break into those papers and turn them into layered, textured art journal pages.
The best part? These steps work for any collection you have at home. I used the same exact 6-step process on two different pages : one with a busier background pattern, and one that is much softer and subtler.

Project 1: Winter Bird & Festive Ornaments
For the first page, I started with a busier patterned paper and used dry brushing with acrylics and flat spatula scraping to knock back the background pattern before adhering it down.
Layering cheesecloth behind the frame and the little bird focal point adds instant tactile texture and gives the eye a soft place to rest amidst the busy background.
To finish the layout, I drew simple hanging strings with a fine-liner for the red ornaments to create a visual triangle, then added loose sketchy shadows, white highlights, and splatters.
Project 2: Cozy Lantern & Clock in Pink
For the second page, I chose a softer pink patterned paper and worked with pink and white acrylic paint to create smooth, painterly resting areas for the eyes.
Instead of cheesecloth, I anchored this cluster with a delicate paper doily, tucking in a pink flower, the vintage clock, and a rustic lantern.
Loose sketchy outlines define each element against the background, while white gel pen accents and snowy white splatters bring the entire festive scene together.
