Want to see something different?!

Well, it has been some time now that I wanted to start an art journal. I love the process of playing with paints, spraying, gluing things down, shading, and making a big mess on my crafting table! ha!

I had the stamps, the acrylic paints, the glues, the gesso and everything else I really needed. So I got some new stencils, dylusions spray inks and some background stamps to get me started. And of course, I bought my first ever art journal.

And here is my moleskine sketchbook (5 x 8.25), as clean as it gets!

While making my first journal page I turned the camera on! So I can share the whole process with you in a super fast speed since it took me a while to finish. The theme is about cardmaking. Well, I just wanted the first page to be about that since I don’t want to betray my other hobby. Makes sense?!

And without any more talking here is my first project. And I so need to read your comments!!! Hope you’ll like it!!!

Here are a few close-ups

That map on the background was actually printed on a printer paper with my inkjet. I then had to tone it down and work on it with paints and everything to make it look like that.

Truth is I loved the whole process and the outcome. I just can’t wait to see my art journal full !

  5. I’ve always loved the look of this “artsy stuff” but was always afraid to try it myself. Your vid makes me think that maybe I CAN do it. Of course, it’s going to mean a trip to the art store for a few supplies, but that’s OK. LOL! Thanks SO much for your instruction and inspiration.

  6. That is really awesome!!! I love all those little techniques you used! But that is a lot of work! You did a great job not creating a mess. Me? I’d have it in my hair by the end! LOL!
And Yes! I’d love to see your next page!

    1. …. you haven’t seen the whole crafting area… i tend to keep that 12×12 inches of camera view clean…. I might zoom out the next time after I finish! HA!

  12. Awesome first page Vicky! Would love to see more. Thanks for sharing, you are an inspiration for me, love your pojects.

  13. This was absolutely fascinating – and wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing it and I would love to see more!!!

  14. Love your first page…I just started art journaling also…I love the process of going from an idea to a finished page and having the page turn out so different from what you first thought it should be…fun stuff.

  15. Hugely enjoyable video. Yes please, I want to see more pages being made. This first one is wonderful.
    Eveline.

  16. I love it! You so surprised me that it would turn out the way it did, when you added all those layers. I love the hearts and envelopes! Yes I would love to see you next one!!!

  17. I only wish I could make such a lovely journal page-I have such admiration for your talent. Thanks for sharing with us.

  18. I absolutely love all that you do whether it’s in cards or art journaling. I’ve recently started doing some of that myself and you seem to have the knack for layering. It takes some practice.

  19. Wow! I’m awaiting to see the next one!… I’m already cardaddik to your card…I think I will become artbookaddik to your art journal! Maybe I will have to start mine! It looks so easy for you…your imagination has no limit!

  20. My daughter and I sat spellbound watching you create. I like that it’s not so very “modern” as some art journalling is that I’ve seen. I have a question: Would Modge Podge work as well instead of that glue? Not sure I can get that here in South Africa but understand the need for sealing the page and elements.
I think I know what I’m going to get my daughter for Christmas… Her own blank journal!

    1. Thank you Riette. I will incorporate my cardmaking love and techniques into my art journal. There are no rules saying you have to use paint or pencil drawing or be abstract. It is your art journal to be as creative as you like in the way you want to. So yes, I might even stamp, paper piece and heat emboss! At the end it might look like a bunch of cards! ha! You can use Modge Podge to glue paper down for sure!

  21. How appropriate that your first journal page is about card making. I have always enjoyed your videos, will enjoy the journal ones as well. Great work!

  22. Vicky
An art journal is good. It’s a place to explore and loosen up and try different things. we all like to branch out and try something different.. I saw imagery that reminded me of your cards and that’s when I really started enjoying it more. I saw the patterns and all the paint and stuff but when I saw the mail box and all the little letters with hearts flowing into the mail box it lifted my spirit. I saw Vicky in the new style and that was good to me. Staying true to one’s self.
it was fun watching. Yes it would be fun to see the next page and to see your cards in general. I love your cards and story telling way of doing them. So original to me. Warm and cozy. I’m always amazed by your work. Keep it up what ever you do …

  23. This video is so inspiring! I guess the part where i “wow-ed” the most was that you didn’t need to use your fingers to lift the little hearts and envelopes onto the page to glue it down, the brush did the job! hahaha! I am actually curious on what u would do with the book cover though. =p

    1. yeah… i guess I have to do something about it.. but I don’t really care at the moment… I am more focused on the inside and putting my ideas together on the blank pages 🙂

  24. Wow, Vicky, this is amazing, What a piece of art! I love that you combined stamping with the more traditional oil pastels and other painting. I painted in the past so this was a bit nostalgic to me. Of course I want to see more pages, love it! 🙂

  25. this is beautiful! I have seen others with their art journals, but I have never watched their videos. You captured my attention with your first page. It truly does mimic your card making which is so very creative. I started following you because I loved that all of your cards had the white “faux” stitching which is an awesome detail. Then I got hooked. I learn something from every video that you make. You think out of the box, which in turn inspires me to think out of the box. I will be following your progress in your art journal and I will most likely incorporate your designs into my cards. Thank you so much for your inspiration! Have a great day and I cannot wait for the second page!

  26. Absolutely love this. I am such a fan. I love all your work, so this is a natural for you. Thanks so much for sharing and I am so looking forward to page 2, 3, 4, etc. Your are amazingly creative.

  27. Vicky, I love it! The page really makes me feel good.

I love your technique of using pastels to shadow around objects.
Did you find that the Pastels stayed on the page, on top of the Gel Medium you had already applied?
Thank you for showing me the idea that I can change the color of my letters with a marker, why didn’t I think of that? Geesh… instead I go out and buy colored letters.

Yes, I want to see more!

    1. Pastels were great on the gel medium, easy to work with. Of course if you plan to put water or top then it’s not the best idea… but I wasn’t planning to so that was fine with me 🙂

  28. It is just beautiful! Yes please share them as you do them. You are such an inspiration thank you for sharing.

  29. I know I commented over at YouTube but I had to come here and say how much I loved your art journal! I loved that its still “you” & all the little touches. You know I loved the new music too! I hope you make more art journal videos! Hugs 🙂

  30. It was fascinating watching your thought process unfold with your page. Really appreciated the “new to me” materials you were using. Would love to see where the next page takes you.

  31. What fabulous journal pages! I can’t believe they are your first ones! Yes please, do more, and let your blog friends see them.

  32. I am so glad you shared this! I love all the different products and techniques you used. The whole page is just wonderful and I sure hope we get to see some more of this art journal. How fun!

  33. Great video! Did you plan all the details of the page before you started? You seem to place all your elements with such confidence and without hesitation. I’d love to see more of your art journal journey. TFS 😉

  34. WOW that is stunningly beautiful! I loved the video I would love to see more pages. I’ve watched it twice now and am totally in aww. Loving how you used the muli matte & gloss medium and the gesso. Always wanted to know what to do with gesso and this was fabulous. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I was working on this for a weekend, but not at one sitting… if I add the time I’ve spend, thinking, arranging, waiting for glue to dry etc it must have been about 3 hours total.

  35. Hi, my friend, I’m just now catching up with your blog after my vacation and I’m so impressed with your art journal style!! You have totally inspired me to revisit my art journal. Your first page is amazing, I love how you incorporated stamping and a printed map; I can’t wait to see more pages from you.
    blessings~

  36. Aw… this is so FABULOUS and so YOU!! My DD S. also has her Moleskine journal, too! Maybe I should get one and decorate like you do!? HUGS!

  37. Well I am totally inspired to start my first journal. I have the moleskin book, matte medium and gesso, various paints and pens and can’t wait to get stuck in and have some fun. Thank you for all the inspiration, I’m really looking forward to following all your pages so when I get stuck I can watch your videos for more ideas. I’m sure they won’t look as good as yours but looking forward to messing about with all the glue, paper, stamps, ink and paint.
It will be something fun to do while they sort out the crisis here in Cyprus, bury my head in the craft room and try to forget the scary world outside.
Thank you so much for sharing all your videos. The ‘high speed’ videos are such fun to watch.

So thank you very much and I look forward to more of your journal

  43. hi, i wanna ask, what is the white thing you applied on it and make it shine? from the vdeo it looks like u applying a kind of glue paint. u used it for both sticking the map and making the surface shine. thank you so much. and by the way i love your art journal design so much!!! love it to the max! <3

  44. Hi! I must tell you that I’m so big big… Huge fan of your artwork! I love all of your art journal pages and I look several times a week if you have uploaded a new video to youtube. You truly are an artist! Keep up the good work!
    Love, Cee from Finland 🙂

  45. After seeing so many of your newer art journal pages I have to say this doesn’t look like a first page to me. It’s wonderful! So many Vicky-elements are there . Your style is easily recognizable and it does inspire the rest of us to give it a try. I’ve learned a lot about art mediums from you. Thank you for all your posts and videos!
