Hi! These days I have been playing with my alcohol inks. If you are wondering how to use those wonderful backgrounds that you can create with them then look no further. I am going to show you how you can turn those alcohol inked backgrounds into stunning art journal layouts quickly and easily.
For my background I worked on white Yupo Paper ( SBC | SSS ). I used a combination of three alcohol inks. I always like to apply some blending solution on my yupo paper first. This helps the inks to blend easily and I can even blow and force the blending with a straw.
Alcohol inks will give you stunning backgrounds with vibrant colors each time. In the areas where the ink is really concentrated you will find that it is sticky. Use some foil sheets on top for adding random shine in different areas. You can see my silver foiling in the photo above.
All you need to do to turn wonderful vibrant backgrounds into art journals is to stamp on top with black ink. Black will help your colors pop even more. I used a new stamp set that I love, by Tim Holtz – Theories( SBC | SSS ). I also added strips of design tapes from the Design Tape – Chatter ( SBC | SSS | JGG ).
Finally, for my motivational quotes I used Quote Chips ( SBC | SSS )

Have a great day!
You are having so much fun with the alcohol inks, Vicky! Great techniques, as always. I haven’t seen that TH stamp set before, it has some terrific images and quotes.
I love this! I love alcohol inks!
What a great page and your ideas are always awesome. Thanks for sharing them.
The silver tape really was perfect addition.
Fantastic page! Bold and vibrant!
Je suis toujours aussi admirative de vos pages. Belle journée !
I saw a video just the other day showing how to use foil with alcohol inks. Looking forward to giving it a try … as well as trying an alcohol inked background for my journal! I like the way you put the blending solution down first and am looking forward to giving that a try as well!!! I would also like to try the “ghost stamp” technique on alcohol ink again. I’ve tried it and haven’t had much success, but I think I know what I need to try to get it to work. If you’ve tried it and have had success, I would love to hear your experience with it. I don’t get a good ghost image (I think because it’s an area with heavy ink and I need to stamp repeatedly and wipe to get the ghost image). By the way, I recently got a glass mat for working on (replacing my ancient self-healing mat that I’ve had for many years), and — like you — I can’t see ever going back to a self-healing mat to work on!!!!! Thanks, Vicky
PS – one question. It looked in the video like you didn’t need any drying time once you stamped on the alcohol ink/yupo. I’m wondering if you had to let the ink dry for a period of time or if you have a way of not needing to do that. Maybe “through the magic of video(!!)” that drying time wasn’t included and it just looked like the ink dried immediately???!!
This is exactly what it is…. the magic of video editing! Inks do dry almost instantly but when you mix them with the blending solution, like I did, they need some time. Not too much though…. I think less than 5 minutes and of course the time depends on how much liquid you have on your surface.
it looks so great!
Great page Vicky, I love to watch how you use the alcohol ink. Thank you and have a nice weekend.
Beautiful layout, Vicky! When I first saw the picture of the finished page, I thought it would be really complicated to do. However, you made it seem more simple! Thanks.
P.S. How is Ginger? He is so cute, I was just wondering… 🙂
Another great alcohol ink background and layout. Thanks for sharing this with us.
