Creating Texture with Tissue Paper and Acrylics
The foundation of this look starts with black and white tissue paper for instant visual texture. I applied matte medium to stick it down, not worrying about wrinkles as in art journaling, wrinkles are just added character! To bring in color, I used a baby wipe technique with blue acrylic paints to create a transparent, layered effect that lets the background designs peek through.
Stenciling and Sketchy Borders
To keep the surface smooth for later stamping, I opted for stenciling with white acrylic paint using a stiff brush rather than thick modeling paste. One of the hallmarks of this style is the hand-drawn border. I combined Jofy Design stamps with fine-liner markers to create sketchy, imperfect lines that frame the entire composition.
The Smudging Technique with PITT Markers
For the focal points, I used a favorite trick: applying Pitt Artist Pens over a dried layer of matte medium. This creates a non-porous surface that allows you to smudge the ink with your finger before it dries, giving a beautifully blended look similar to alcohol markers but with less effort. I finished the flowers with white gel pen highlights and acrylic markers for vibrant, opaque details.
